Does God Still Work in Chaos?
This year will go down in the history books as one of unprecedented upheaval. Lockdowns, disease, and economic hardships have created a feeling of instability that we haven’t endured in decades. If we spend our days consumed with social media and the latest news, we may question, is God still working amid the chaos? The answer is, He is. We can find solace in one simple word, “But.”
Crossway published author Jen Oshman wrote, “Throughout scripture we see ‘but God,’ or ‘but Christ,’ or ‘but when…’ Something was lost, but now it’s found. Someone was dead but is now alive. A person was blind but now can see. There was no way, but God made a way. The word ‘but’ in scripture often introduces the message of God’s gracious and compassionate intervention. This simple term captures the nature of our God. He redeems, resurrects, and makes all things new. All seems lost, and then we hear, ‘but God.’ He intervenes. He saves.”1
Over the next few months, we want to share some “But God” stories that GSI field workers have experienced amid the chaos of COVID and beyond. As you read them, we hope that you will find encouragement, strength, and a sense of awe that God’s overarching purpose of seeing the Gospel go to the nations is not being thwarted.
The first one in the chaos series, which you will receive next week, is from a field worker that is “waiting” to go overseas for the first time.
